Hitting the Trail: Movement and Wagon Trains

Claim the Range is becoming a world players can travel. Normal movement and Wagon Trains introduce two ways to explore the frontier, from careful local exploration to faster long-distance journeys.

A wagon train crosses a frontier valley at sunset.

The frontier is now open for travel.

A new development milestone introduces working browser-based movement, giving players the ability to navigate the Claim the Range world using visible controls or keyboard shortcuts.

Ordinary movement travels one coordinate at a time. This allows players to move carefully between locations and explore the surrounding countryside.

For longer journeys, Wagon Train travel provides a faster alternative, covering ten coordinates in a selected direction.

The distinction is intentional. Players can move slowly when searching an area or switch to faster travel when they need to cover considerable distance.

Travel also works across the world's wraparound boundaries, so movement remains consistent even when a player reaches the edge of the coordinate grid.

Another important part of the foundation is the relationship between a player's Fort and their current position.

The Fort remains the player's permanent home, while their roaming location changes as they explore. Traveling across the world doesn't move the Fort itself.

The result is one of the first genuinely interactive pieces of Claim the Range.

The map is no longer simply generated data. Players can move through it, visit locations, and begin discovering what the frontier contains.
